Laboratory Assistant Full Time Day Shift

Job Summary:
Responsible for assisting the medical technologists and technicians in processing and final disposition of specimens through the technical departments. The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for clerical and client services duties within the technical departments (phoning and faxing laboratory results when requested, filing instrument printouts, entering orders on CPL patients). They may provide backup assistance for phlebotomy, if needed.
Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:
* Receives specimens and enters orders (accessions) for testing. Develops transport lists for transferred specimens. Documents pertinent specimen information in laboratory information system (LIS) and specimen processing logs according to UTHET Laboratory Policies and Procedures.
* Provides requested specimen information in a professional and timely manner. Team member is able to correctly use LIS to access orders so as to add tests to previously submitted specimens in a timely manner.
* Processes and stores laboratory specimens according to UTHET Laboratory Policies and Procedures. Maintains specimens in the specimen storage area.
* Receives and stores supplies in the appropriate departments. Maintains inventory documentation.
* Performs Client Services functions within the technical and referral testing areas.
* Loads and unloads specimens on automated instrumentation. Inspects specimens for hemolysis, clots, etc. Communicates to MT or MLT unacceptable/questionable specimens. Follows up with phlebotomy on specimens requiring recollection.
* Coordinates accurate ordering, tracking, and transport of specimens to reference laboratories.
* Assists with the disposal of biohazardous trash within the technical departments.
* Participates in Laboratory Continuing Education Program. Maintains competence.
* Follows all safety procedures.
* Team member carries out their job in a quality manner and takes an active role in continuous quality improvement in accordance with the UTHSCT policies and procedures.
* Follows ethical standards for medical information and maintains professionalism in appearance, communication with others, and work quality. Demonstrates absolute integrity and quality to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
* Understands the Laboratory Compliance Plan and HIPAA policies and follows policies in day-to-day work. Communicates issues/information regarding compliance as defined in the compliance plan.
* Regularly communicates with technical director/medical director any issues or concerns that could impact patient results.
* Conducts himself/herself in a professional manner and encourages teamwork within and outside the laboratory.

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

Required Education / Experience:
* Must meet the CLIA testing personnel qualifications for High complexity testing
* Must obtain their MLT or MT certification within two years of employment.
* Associate Degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physical Sciences and at least 24 hours:
* Six semester hours of Chemistry
* Six semester hours of Biology
* Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
